Case study · Hartnack & Co

Build a bespoke binder, priced as you go.

Hartnack & Co hand-makes ring binders, box files and portfolios to order in Devon. We built the store’s product builder: nine short steps with pictures and help to hand, and a running price that follows the shopper down the page.

Recorded on the live store: size, orientation, mechanism and cover chosen in turn, with the price at the top updating at each step

What we built

What shoppers can do.

Recorded on the live store at phone size: the help, the gallery and the ideas on each product page.

01Help to hand

Answers without leaving the page.

Not sure which ring mechanism? A tab beside the question opens the full guide over the page, and closing it puts the shopper back where they were.

03Made before

Ideas on every product page.

Each product page carries pieces made with that product before, to swipe through for ideas, and a button at the top of the page jumps straight to them.

Under the hood

Thousands of combinations, one page.

The builder runs on Shopify’s own products and the theme editor, so the team can change it without us. Three pieces do the work.

01

Questions the team can edit

The problem
Every product asks different questions, and the options change over time.
What we built
Each step is a section in the theme editor, with its own help panel. Each answer can carry a picture, a price, and a rule to show it only for UK or US paper sizes.
What it means
New options and new products are set up in the admin, not in code.
02

A price that adds up

The problem
A made-to-order price depends on every choice, far more combinations than one product can hold as variants.
What we built
The product carries the base price; every priced extra is its own add-on product. The running total adds them up as the shopper goes, and add to basket puts the product and its add-ons in together, with every answer saved on the order.
What it means
The price is right without a calculator, and the workshop gets the full spec with each order.
03

A gallery that sells

The problem
It is hard to picture a finished piece from a list of options.
What we built
Past pieces are stored as gallery entries in the admin, each with its photos, the options it used and the product it was built on, filed by use and shown on the matching product pages.
What it means
Every new entry is an example a shopper can copy, with one tap to build the same thing.

The tools

  • ShopifyThe store, on Shopify’s Dawn theme, built out with the builder and the gallery.
  • Theme sectionsOne per question, edited in the theme editor.
  • Add-on productsCarry the price of each extra, so the total is always right.
  • MetaobjectsThe customer gallery entries and the options each one used.
How an order flows through it
  1. 01

A shopper opens a product and answers the first question, the size.

  2. 02

Each answer moves them on to the next question, and the running price at the top updates.

  3. 03

Help for any question opens over the page, and examples of past pieces are a tap away.

  4. 04

Add to basket puts the product and each priced extra in together, with every answer saved on the order.

  5. 05

Checkout is Shopify’s own, and the order arrives with the full spec for the workshop.

For the Hartnack & Co team
