Change or remove the store name at the end of every page title

The fix

The name comes from your theme, not from Shopify. Shopify’s own themes, Dawn and Horizon, add a dash and the store name to every page title unless the title already contains it.

To move it on one page, put the name where you want it in that page’s search engine listing title. To change or remove it everywhere, change one line in the theme. Rename the store only if checkout and order emails should change too.

01Where the name comes from

Shopify’s help pages put it plainly: “Your theme uses your shop name followed by the title of the content,” or it “uses the title of the content followed by your shop name” (Shopify Help, SEO titles and descriptions). Shopify’s own Dawn and Horizon themes do the second, in this line:

Dawn, layout/theme.liquid (Horizon has the same lines in snippets/meta-tags.liquid)liquid
<title>
  {{ page_title }}
  {%- if current_tags %} &ndash; tagged "{{ current_tags | join: ', ' }}"{% endif -%}
  {%- if current_page != 1 %} &ndash; Page {{ current_page }}{% endif -%}
  {%- unless page_title contains shop.name %} &ndash; {{ shop.name }}{% endunless -%}
</title>

page_title is the page’s search engine listing title, or its own title when that’s left blank (Shopify, page_title), and shop.name is the store name in Settings. The last line adds the name unless the title already holds it. Liquid’s contains is a plain, exact text match, capitals included (Liquid source, condition.rb), so the name is left off only when the title holds it exactly as it’s typed in Settings.

That’s why a carefully written SEO title still gets the name on the end, and why this Shopify Community question about Horizon (Dec 2025) and this one about Dawn (Jan 2024) keep coming up. Neither has an answer marked as the solution.

Why renaming the store is usually the wrong fix

One reply in the Horizon thread suggests changing the store name in Settings. That does change every title, but the store name isn’t only used there.

  1. 01

    Checkout

    “At the top of each checkout and customer account page, a header displays your store name,” unless you add a logo (Shopify Help, checkout style).

  2. 02

    Order emails

    Shopify’s notification emails go out with the store name as the sender name. An owner on Shopify Community (Dec 2024) put it this way: “order emails are using these names as sender names and we don’t want this.” We renamed a store for exactly this reason (below).

  3. 03

    Link previews

    Dawn and Horizon also send the store name as og:site_name, the site name in a shared link’s preview, and fall back to it for og:title.

Google is separate again. It may not use your title as written: its sources for the title in a result include the <title>, headings and og:title (Google, title links). And the site name it shows above a result is “for the entire site”. Google works it out from the home page and mentions elsewhere, and if you want to set it, WebSite structured data on the home page counts most, with og:site_name and the home page’s <title> also read (Google, site names). Taking the name out of your titles doesn’t take it out of that.

02Two routes: the theme, or the store name

For store owners

  1. Move it on one page: use its search engine listing title

    On a product, open the Search engine listing section and click the pencil icon (Shopify Help, products); on a page, click Edit website SEO in the same section. Type the title you want with the store name where you want it, spelt exactly as in Settings > General, capitals and all. Dawn and Horizon then won’t add it again. This moves the name; it can’t remove it.

  2. Keep it short, name included

    Shopify warns that a title over 70 characters “might get cut off in search engine results”, and its SEO page suggests 60: “To avoid shortened titles in search engine results, consider keeping your title up to 60 characters” (Shopify Help, SEO titles and descriptions). The name the theme adds isn’t in the box you type into, but it is in the title Google sees, so leave room for it.

  3. The home page has its own title

    Set it in Online Store > Preferences, under Social sharing image and SEO. The same rule applies.

  4. Change or remove it everywhere: ask for one theme change

    Send this page to whoever looks after your theme. It’s a small change, and it covers every page you add later.

  5. Rename the store only if you mean everywhere

    In Settings > General, click the store name under Store contact details and edit Store name. Every title, the checkout header and the order emails change together. “Changing your store name doesn’t change your default myshopify.com domain name” (Shopify Help, store details).

For developers

  1. To remove it, delete the last line

    Take out the unless page_title contains shop.name line from layout/theme.liquid in Dawn, or snippets/meta-tags.liquid in Horizon. In another theme, search its code for <title> to find its version of the line. Then check the home page, whose title comes from Preferences.

  2. To change it, build the title in one snippet

    Capture the title, its tag and page parts, and pass that to a snippet that ends it the way the brand wants. Use the same snippet wherever the theme writes a <title>, so nothing is missed.

  3. Check the other titles

    Dawn’s password page has its own <title>{{ shop.name }}</title> in layout/password.liquid, and its gift card page passes shop.name into its title in templates/gift_card.liquid. Horizon’s gift card page does the same, while its password page uses snippets/meta-tags.liquid, so it follows the main title. Change those too if they should match.

  4. Catch the name typed into titles

    Team members type the old form of the name into SEO titles. Text matching is exact, so swap each likely way of typing it, as below.

snippets/page-title.liquid (the brand name is a placeholder)liquid
{%- liquid
  assign brand = 'BRAND NAME'
  assign full = title | strip
  # Swap the old form wherever someone typed it into an SEO title.
  assign full = full | replace: 'Brand Name', brand | replace: 'brand name', brand
  if full == blank
    echo brand
  elsif full contains brand
    echo full
  else
    echo full | append: ' &ndash; ' | append: brand
  endif
-%}
layout/theme.liquid, in place of the <title> blockliquid
{%- capture page_title_full -%}
  {{ page_title }}
  {%- if current_tags %} &ndash; tagged "{{ current_tags | join: ', ' }}"{% endif -%}
  {%- if current_page != 1 %} &ndash; Page {{ current_page }}{% endif -%}
{%- endcapture -%}
<title>{% render 'page-title', title: page_title_full %}</title>
  • In the password layout: <title>{% render 'page-title', title: page_title %}</title>. In the gift card template, capture its title text first and pass that.
  • To remove the name rather than change it, the snippet can end at echo full, keeping the blank check so a page with no title of its own still gets one.
  • If Google should show the new form as your site name, give it to WebSite structured data on the home page, as Google recommends. Dawn already writes this in sections/header.liquid (home page only) with "name": {{ shop.name | json }}, so change that; Horizon writes only an Organization block, so add one. Change og:site_name in snippets/meta-tags.liquid too, since Google reads that as well.
  • On a store in more than one language, the search engine listing titles can be translated but the store name can’t: Shopify’s only translatable fields for the shop are the home page’s title and description (Shopify, translatable resource types). The name on the end is the same in every language unless the snippet varies it.

03Read the title back

  1. Look at the tab

    Open a product, a collection, a page and the home page. Hover each tab, or view the source and find <title>.

  2. Try a page with the name in its SEO title

    The name should appear once, where it was typed.

  3. Try page 2 and a tag

    Page 2 of a collection should still say “Page 2”, and a tag filter should still say “tagged”.

  4. Check the password and gift card pages

    If the store has a password page on, open it in a private window.

  5. Then give Google time

    Search results change as Google recrawls: “Crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.” To ask for a page sooner, use the URL Inspection tool in Search Console (Google, ask Google to recrawl).

From our work

04A fashion label’s titles, then its emails

A UK fashion label we look after writes its name in its own styling, which isn’t how the store name was typed in Shopify. On 26 Oct 2026, the day before its new theme went live, the label asked for the browser tab and Google titles to end in the brand’s styling.

The theme fix (26 Oct 2026). One snippet now builds every title on the site: the theme layout, the password page and the gift card page. It ends each title in the brand’s styling and swaps the old form wherever it’s typed into an SEO title. A follow-up the same night made a page with no title of its own read the brand alone, without a stray dash. We left the store name as it was, so checkout and order emails were unchanged.

The rename (28 Oct 2026). Two days later we renamed the store to the brand’s styling, so checkout, customer account pages and order emails, which Shopify writes under the store name, match the titles. The title snippet stayed: it still catches the old form typed into SEO titles.

So the store used both routes, each for its own job: the theme for the titles in time for launch, the store name once checkout and the emails were to match.

  • In our live log“Browser tab titles now end in the brand's own styling”

The bigger picture

05Your name is in more places than the title

The store name sits in page titles, link previews, the checkout header and every order email, and Google keeps a site name of its own. When a brand changes how it writes its name, list every place it appears before changing any of them, so customers don’t see two versions.

Changes like this, made in the theme with a check of every page type, are part of our support work.
